Vow Renewals
In this blog post we’re talking all about vow renewals and ideas for your own. What is a vow renewal ceremony? Why do couples have them and when? We’re going to go over the three different kinds and give you inspiration for your own vow renewals!
What is a Vow Renewal?
So first of all, what is a vow renewal? It is when a married couple reaffirms their vows by having a ceremony and restating their promises to each other.
Next, why do couples do them? There are quite a few reasons why a couple might want to have a vow renewal ceremony. They might want to reaffirm their vows, restate their vows, bring back that beginning of marriage feeling, or just have a moment that’s really special for them so that they can rekindle their relationship. Celebrating a vow renewal can bring back fun adventures and be a really great day to celebrate their marriage.
Couples have vow renewal ceremonies that are entirely unique and personalized to them. There is no right or wrong answer! If you just want to have a second wedding, go for it. If you really want a personal day between you and your significant other, you can do that too. Vow renewals are super powerful and romantic and I absolutely love and recommend them.
So when is a good time do have a vow renewal ceremony? Some couples do them every 10 years, some do them on their 50th wedding anniversary, but I’ve seen people do them on their 17th, 28th, and 30th wedding anniversaries. I’ve also seen people do them every five years, on their wedding date, and also entirely new dates. It can be whenever they want which is part of the beauty of a vow renewal ceremony! They’re kind of like second weddings, but you’re already married and happily in this life together and this is just a stop on the road in your journey together.
Three Types of Vow Renewals
There are three different types of vow renewal ceremonies. First is a big affair with lots of vendors, you’re completely dressed up, and are basically having an entire second wedding. The second is casual with less vendors and not as big as a second wedding. And lastly, number three is an adventurous vow renewal in which you go out in nature and say your vows with however many vendors you’d like.
Just like there are no rules for your wedding, there are no rules for your vow renewal ceremony. You can have many guests there, no guests there, or you can have a huge party like a wedding. Also you can add a reception to it or just have the ceremony and a dinner. Another idea is to have an all day affair or just have a day to involve your kids, pets, friends, and family. There are no rules, but I’m going to give you a little bit of inspiration below.
Vow Renewal Inspiration
First of all your team of vendors can be as many or as few as you’d like. You can have the ceremony at a venue such as Mountain View Event Farm in Virginia just outside of Harrisonburg. You can have it at a venue like there or somewhere else where you actually reserve the date for yourself. I highly recomment not doing a Saturday because those are mainly reserved for big weddings. But of course go for whatever your heart desires!
In addition to venues, you can have photopgrahers, videographers, hair and makeup stylists, the original wedding dress, a new wedding dress, a bigger ceremony, or a smaller ceremony. It is all up to you! Or maybe you have more money saved up for your dream wedding and now you can have florists, a cake decorator, catering, DJ, custom made signs, and anything else that you want. Anything that you can think of to have at a wedding you can also have for a vow renewal ceremony.
Next, there are so many things you and your significant other can do together at your renewal. You can write letters to each other and read them together or separate before, during, or after your ceremony. You can get ready together if you didn’t do that on your wedding day, you can have a luxurious dinner, or you can hire a live band or musician and have a concert for just the two of you. If you’d like to turn it into a bigger adventure, you can go somewhere together on a vacation or a simple sunset hike with a picnic. The possibilities are absolutely endless for what you can do for your renewal ceremonies. I really think they are super powerful and memorable and they show that your wedding really was just the beginning.
I hope the concept of vow renewals is less hazy for you now and that you have inspiration for your own ceremony! I’ve shot quite a few vow renewal ceremonies and you can view them on my blog if you’d like!
